For the International Design class I had to design a tribute to Tamara de Lempicka, an awesome Art Deco painter. I love her use of muted colors with a few pops of color always on the main subject of the painting and also the emphasis she gives to female faces. I used an old drawing I'd done a while ago and gave it a more art deco/lempicka look.

Such a Pretty Fat

What I like about Such a Pretty Fat by Jen Lancaster is the way it spoke to me. I could totally identify with this woman trying to lose weight without denying that food, indeed, is awesome. If you are expecting the typical tale of how a shy and insecure woman lost weight and through being skinny found herself, then this is not the book for you. Jen Lancaster has a very in-your-face attitude and is proud of who she is no matter her size or how much she loves to eat. What drives her to want (and I say want, because you read half the book before she actually really takes on a diet) to lose weight is her health, not the way she looks. It’s a great book to remind us the real reason why we should lose weight, because we want to be healthy and happy.

The book is extremely funny and sincere; I initially picked it up while I waited for my boyfriend to be done drooling over the math and science books at Borders. The cute cover and the quirky name attracted me and I thought I could check out what kind of bull crap this Jen Lancaster was going to try to sell me about losing weight, but what I found was funny and addictive and even after my boyfriend wanted to leave, I wanted to take the book with me. I didn’t have the money and after considering for a few minutes if I should slip it into my purse, I realized that I was about to break the law for a book and sadly put it back. But I came back for it the next day. I recommend this book for anyone that has ever gone through diets or if you have ever doubted that you are amazing.

It's been a long time since I painted anything using acrylics, so I bought new paints and a few canvas. Drawing cat doodles is easy for me, so I made a tiny practice painting of my cat. I hope to progress to more complicated things as I practice.

Charming and funny movie about a 10-year-old boy that wants to be a cheerleader, but his Catholic school won't let him because according to them only girls can be cheerleaders.

I really liked the way the character were portrayed as different and quirky, but it was not in a cartoony way.

One of my favorite movie genres is period movies, I've always loved them, except for Tess the d'Urberville because it is too tragic and dark for my taste. It ad been a while since I had watched one so today I decided to see the BBC four-part miniseries North and South based on the 1855 novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell. The movie begins when Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby-Ashe) and her family move from a country town to the industrial town of Milton. In it she encounters a society where people either live richly or starve to death, the poor work at the cotton mills under horrible conditions and the masters live a privileged life of comfort. Margaret is appalled by the mistreatment of the poor and soon befriends some of them even though they are from different social classes. She also befriends the mill owner John Thornton (Richard Armitage) even though she disagrees with the way she treats his workers. This friendship has romantic tones but we are never sure what is going to happen between Margaret and Mr. Thornton throughout the movie.

Full of social commentaries about the social differences and the mistreatment of the poor, it is a very well done adaptation of the book, with an excellent cast of actors that sucks you into the drama not wanting to miss a second. I had planned to only watch the first episode today, but soon found myself addicted to it and ended up watching the whole series. The portrayal of the characters was my favorite thing about the movie, they were human, not good or bad people in it, no black and-white situations but lots of gray areas that really made me like the movie. Still there's contrasts throughout the movie, not the typical good versus evil but the poor contrasted with the rich especially through the wardrobe and homes they live in, the north as the dark city life against the south as the sunny country life, and the workers compared with the masters. Still, the contrast is not judgmental, the cons and pros of each side are allowed to shine through.

Wonder Woman Animated Movie

Just finished watching the Wonder Woman Animated Movie. It was good, but I was expecting so much more from it. There were good parts (Amazon ghouls!!) and it was action packed, but kinda short. I enjoyed so much more Justice League: The New Frontiers and Wonder Woman was so much better in it. It was kind of tiresome that they used the same themes of man v. woman, Paradise Island and so on when dealing with Wonder Woman, I think it limits what can be done with the characters story wise. All superheroes have their shtick, but they are not limited to it, you don't see Batman only fighting the Joker and constantly avenging his parent's death. I don't get why they have to do that with Wonder Woman.
